The Building Renovation

A vibrant hub that encourages young people to aim high, challenge themselves, and drive their own journey.

The History

The Neath BGC stands on a site with a much longer history than the club itself. While the club was established in 1929, the development of the land dates back to 1859, when it was purchased by members of the Bible Christian movement. They built a chapel named “Hope,” along with a schoolroom, houses, and cottages, establishing the area as a place of community, learning and support. The chapel was rebuilt in 1871 and expanded over time as the congregation grew. Religious services ended in 1913 and the chapel changed use, becoming the Neath Boy’s Club, focusing on the development and wellbeing of local boys. In 1949, the building was gifted to the club, and it remains in its ownership today.

Major redevelopments took place in 1991–1992, when much of the old structure was knocked down and a modern structure was built, though still reflective of the older layout. Parts of the original structure still remain today - see if you can spot it when you come to visit.

160 years on, the site stands as a blend of old and new, carrying forward its long-standing role as a place of community, support, and opportunity in Melincryddan.

Renovation and Development

Over the past 2 years, significant work has been carried out to improve and restore the building, with a clear focus on creating a safer, more welcoming, and more functional space for our members.

This has included essential structural repairs such as roof improvements, upgrades to the kitchen, and the installation of modern, energy-efficient lighting throughout the building. In addition, both fire safety and intruder alarm systems have been fully updated to ensure the space is safe and secure for everyone who uses it.

The main hall has also undergone a full refresh, including new flooring, repainting, and the installation of soundproofing.

These changes have transformed the space into a more comfortable and versatile environment, better suited for activities, events, and group sessions.

More recently, work has focused on upgrading the downstairs facilities, including the completion of new girls’ toilets and continued improvements to internal spaces. Further work has been completed to the fire door replacements. The final finishing touches to the interior makes the space more welcoming and practical.

What this means for our members

These improvements are about more than just upgrading a building, they are about creating a space where our members feel safe, comfortable, and proud to spend their time.

The upgraded hall provides a better environment for activities, events, and group sessions, with improved acoustics and flooring making it more enjoyable and accessible. The improved lighting and safety systems ensure that members can use the space with confidence, knowing it is secure and well maintained.

As the refurbishment continues, the goal is to create a fully modernised, inclusive environment that supports wellbeing, encourages participation, and gives members a space that genuinely meets their needs.

This is about investing in the future of our members and ensuring they have a space that helps them grow, connect, and thrive.
